Robin James (Project Lead)
Science Leader at Exeter Road Primary School
Robin had the idea for this project while walking on Exmouth beach with his wife! He began working at Exeter Road two years before graduating from Rolle College, which used to be based in the town as part of the University of Plymouth. He’s taught at the school since 1997 and been its science leader since 2008.
In 2010-11 Robin led another project shortlisted for the Rolls-Royce Science Prize, which inspired children to design, build and test miniature greenhouses from materials that would otherwise be thrown away. This led to the construction of a full-size greenhouse made from panels of 9 CD cases, based on a design by three Year 3 girls. The project proved so innovative and successful as a way of promoting science and technology that Robin has come up with a project idea for Rolls-Royce every year since, so he’s thrilled this year to have got through once again to the final nine!
Robin embarked on a Masters course in 2012 in Science Education and Leadership through the National Science Learning Centre. In January 2013, he was invited onto the panel at the ASE conference debate in Reading. In January of this year, he became a fellow of the Primary Science Teaching Trust.

  35. In our class year4 we investigated gravity and air resistance.Clases came arownd the school to do some activitys. They were FFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUNNNNNNNNN!

  36. it was fun showig people how gravity works

  37. I enjoyed helping the 2 men.(y)

  38. We tried out some ideas on the beach and found out that wider wheels work better than thin wheels, and wheels with rounded rims like tyres sit on top of the sand while sharp rims like tin cans cut into the sand and get stuck. We also tried using a plastic bag as a sail and this worked well when the wind filled up the whole bag. But because the wind was very strong on the day we tried it out our small cart got blown over and didn’t really work – we think we need to make it heavy on the bottom or use a bigger teddy or lots of teddy passengers too. We also think it is important to flatten down the sand first! We are still not sure if 3 or 4 wheels work best or where the wheels should go – on each corner or 1 or 2 in the middle at the front?

  39. hope everyone enjoyed the sand yachts and well done to the people that got to go to the beach for the big race.
hope everyone had a good time making these sand yachts and we think everyone did very well.
